That said, if I was just looking for short term gratification I could go back to writing ad copy or, gasp, go into politics (actually, have rejected multiple offers from both parties, so not happening).

Seriously, I write for me, first. The goal is to push the boundaries as far as I can. My unpacking of ideas must stand up to my intellectual standards, which, for better or worse, is brutally demanding.

The silver lining is that it appears I am filling a void in articulating an alternative vision of what is happening and what is possible. Maybe, at some point, that will make a small difference. If not, I am content trying to do my best.
