Great Assessment. Three Added Considerations.
The picture you paint is spot on. Especially problematic, as you note, is looming social upheaval. Having worked on these problems for quite a while it seems to me there are three imperatives:
- Education: We need “augmented knowledge systems” separating reliable content from the rest. This is not a Q&A a “the” answer service. It is a filtered database listing the most reliable content in “need-to-know” areas (a finite universe) for on-demand access. (Full disclosure, this is what my company seeks to provide.) Importance of this grows as virtual assistant service (e.g., echo/alexa, siri, viv) become “ambient systems,” and ubiquitous. Simply put, no one wants a service providing unreliable content. In essence, this is logical extension of showrooming.
- Politics: We need an issued-based platform to parallel existing political agenda setting, policy and decision making. Simply attempting to reform archaic, dysfunctional systems populated by conflicts of interests will exacerbate transitional social upheaval. A parallel platform provides a needed comparative to the status quo, as with demise of USSR, and sorely missing today. Simply put, the sociopolitical unrest today reflects what you state as “need large, institutional commitments to examine population-level interventions and assess outcomes before it’s too late.”
- Economics: Tech data collection and privacy issues need to be reframed as property rights issues. As such the aggregate data from compensated opt-in will suffice for economic and social physics needs, provide new income stream for participants and mitigate privacy concerns simultaneously. Mere tweaking of existing ad-auction process could easily facilitate this in a mutually beneficial way. Illustrative, each Google search grosses ~27 cents but results in 24 cent net profit. There is economic room for all to benefit
Seems to me all three of these activities must advance to begin mitigating concerns you highlight. If interested, there are numerous articles referencing all these topics on my Medium publication, A Passion to Evolve
