Fake News is Forever. Trick is To Isolate Excellence.
The supermarket tabloid, National Inquirer, next to checkouts is still there. It’s trash but some people buy it. Most do not. It sells and is not going away. Conspiracies have existed since the first campfires. Imaginative scenarios know no bounds.
So ,all this media hand-wring is silly waste of time. What’s really dumb, however, is the way Facebook and other online platforms and services think they can somehow winnow, catch or edit this nonsense effectively from the bottom-up. It’s tantamount to saying we can eliminate evil in the world by handing out the equivalent parking tickets. Evil isn’t going away and the ticket system will be gamed
So, to all the people in the media, Silicon Valley, D.C. and online — get real. This junk, this crap isn’t going away. There is one and ONLY one alternative. Create databases, services and systems dedicated to providing ONLY reliable, superior content — islands. (Full disclosure, this is what my company provides)
This way the people who want or can’t recognize bullsh*t can have it. Those who have a life, realize life is short and want to cut to the chase and find the real deal can simple go straight to the islands.
Finally, let’s be clear. This fake news is a global problem that MUST be dealt with through island. Otherwise, the advancement of search, virtual assistants, augmented reality and AI will be polluted and thus stymied. As with Microsoft’s foul-mouth racist chatbot, Tay, having more of this nonsense injected into our lives through these newer technologies will only serve to make more areas of life dysfunctional.
On my Medium publication, A Passion to Evolve, there are numerous articles on these topics. For example:
