Amusing. But Covert Repression Is Way Better.

Setting aside the Pink Floyd music from the Wall rolling around in my head, overt repression — fascism — is sooooo 20th century. What’s better and in vogue is covert repression. It’s the surveillance state every country now has at their disposal.

As for the kids, between the vehicles they travel in, cameras everywhere, their phones and time spent on the web and apps they have already become the first generation to have cradle to grave state dossiers since the East German Stasi. So every new toy or gadget or biomarker merely refines the granularity of the dossier. In any case, as you suggest, malcontents can now be easily culled from the herd.

What’s really profoundly amusing is how we fail to appreciate what’s already happened and confront it as a society.
